vi (pronounced vee-EYE, short for 'visual') editor is a screen editor available on most UNIX systems. The vi editor was introduced in 1983 by Bill joy. VI is a very efficient way to edit C or C++ source code. It is installed by default on all Unix and Linux systems. vi uses a small amount of memory, which allows efficient operation when the network is busy. Because vi uses standard alphanumeric keys for commands, one can use it on virtually any terminal or workstation in existence without having to worry about unusual keyboard mappings.
